Fields of Scholarship and Research Interests

Francisco de Assis Tenório de Carvalho's scientific contributions were made in Machine Learning, with an emphasis on unsupervised learning and machine learning from symbolic data, described by variables that can take as their value a set of categories, a range, or an empirical distribution (histogram).

He was the first to work in this area in Brazil, having proposed original methods for predicting time series, regression, clustering, co-clustering and Kohonen self-organizing maps (SOM) for interval-type data. He also proposed methods for clustering, co-clustering and SOM for data described by histogram-type variables. Other notable contributions include work on clustering and SOM for multi-view relational data and work on clustering based on kernel functions with automatic weighting of descriptor variables.
