Roin Metreveli was born on the 7th of December 1939. He graduated from the Department of History at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (1962). In 1965, R. Metreveli defended his Candidate thesis and a scientific degree of Candidate of Sciences was conferred upon him. Since that time, he has delivered lectures at Tbilisi State University. Along with scientific activity, R. Metreveli, in 1960-72, occupied significant desks in Komsomol and Communist Party organizations. He was Secretary, Second Secretary, and First Secretary at the Central Committee of the Georgian Komsomol organization. In 1970-72, he occupied the position of the Head of the Party and Organizational activity at the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Georgia. In 1974, he defended his Doctoral thesis scientific and a degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences was conferred upon him. 1966-74, he was elected Deputy to the Supreme Soviet of Georgia. In 1990 he was elected a Member of the Parliament summoned for the first time in independent Georgia. He is one of the first publishers and Editor-in-Chief of the first National Universal Georgian Encyclopaedia (1972-1985).
In 1985 – 1988, Professor R. Metreveli was the Rector at Alexander Pushkin Tbilisi State Pedagogical Institute. In 1988 he was elected Corresponding Member at the Academy of Sciences of Georgia and since that very year, he served as an Academician-Secretary at the Division of Social Sciences at the Academy of Sciences of Georgia as well. This position he occupied until 2023. From 1991 – 2005, he was Rector at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and Head of the Chair of History of Georgia at the same University (1997-2005). Professor at Saint Andrew the First-Called Georgian University (2008). From October 2013 to June 2023, he was Vice-President of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences. From June 2023 until now, he is the President of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences.
Professor R. Metreveli is a member of the California (San Francisco, United States) International Academy of Art, Science, and Education (1996), member of the International Academy of Higher Education (Moscow, Russia, 1997), and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (Salzburg, Austria, 2009). He was the Chairman of the Council of Rectors of Georgian Higher Educational Institutions (1996 – 2004), the President of the Georgian National Committee of Historians (1996), the President of the National Academy of Political Sciences (2013), the Academician of the Academy of National and Social Relations (2004). Since 1991, Professor R. Metreveli has been the Editor of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences Journal “Matsne” (Herald). (Series of History), the Editor-in-Chief of Annuals “Kartuli Diplomatia” [Georgian Diplomacy] (18 volumes published) and “Kavkazika” [Caucausica] (7 volumes published), the Chairman of the Commission on the Georgian Historical Sources at the Georgian National Academy of Sciences (1995), the Editorial Board Member of the Journal “Georgika” (Germany – Georgia, 1997), the Member of Editorial College of the International Journal “The Caucasus and Globalization” (Stockholm, in English, 2009). Member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal "Историческое пространство" (Historic Space, 2007). Roin Metreveli is a Distinguished Scientist of the Abkhazian Autonomous Republic (1996). He was awarded the title “Laureate of the State Prize of Georgia in the field of Science” (1988). In 1999, 2010, 2000, and 2012 Ivane Javakhishvili University Prize, Academy Prize, A. Tsereteli Prize, and Shota Meskhia Prize were conferred upon him. Professor R. Metreveli is the President of the Society of Georgian-Israeli Friendship. In 2003, he was honoured with International Academy (Rating) “Fortuna” Saint George’s Medal, Fridtjof Nansen’s Medal (2000). He is honored with National Orders and Medals: Order of Honour (2003), Ekvtime Takaishvili Grand Medal(2003), the highest reward of the Georgian Patriarchate - St. George’s Gold Order (2011), Ilia Chavchavadze Prize (Medal, 2023). He is an Honorary citizen of Tbilisi (1999), Kutaisi (1996), Borjomi (2000), and Ikalto (1991), Honoured Teacher of Tbilisi (1999). Honorary Professor at Tbilisi Technical University, Sokhumi, Kutaisi, A. Tsereteli, Gori, N. Baratashvili, Samtskhe-Javakheti (Akhaltsikhe), M. Nalbandian, Gyumri (Armenia) (2000) and Don (Russian Federation) Universities.
Being a Parliamentarian, he signed the Act onthe Restoration of Independence of Georgia (1991, April 9). Roin Metreveli researches the history of Georgia and the Caucasus, source studies, historiography, and the history of social thoughts and diplomacy. He published more than 200 scientific works, including 12 monographs. He is the author of textbooks on the history of Georgia for higher and secondary schools.
