Fields of Scholarship and Research Interests
Ernesto Estrada is a mathematician, internationally leading the mathematical analysis of complex networks. He has developed the mathematical theory of network communicability, which is nowadays applied in many areas of interdisciplinary research, especially in the study of brain networks. He introduced what is now known as the Estrada index, a graph spectrum-based measure widely used in protein folding, mathematical chemistry, and general network analysis. He pioneered the concept of subgraph centrality, which counts the participation of nodes in all closed walks, giving finer insight into node importance in networks. He developed the spectral scaling approach and d path/hubs biased Laplacians, enabling modeling of long-range interactions and anomalous diffusion processes on networks. Estrada introduced communicability geometry, embedding networks into geometric spaces to analyze traffic flows, disease spread, and more. More recently, he has integrated fractional calculus and dynamic network modeling, applying these to several interdisciplinary areas of research.
