Fields of Scholarship and Research Interests
Nicola Leone is an Italian computer scientist who works in the areas of artificial intelligence, knowledge representation and reasoning, and database theory.
Honors, Awards and Other Membership
• EurAI Fellow since August 2012 (Montpellier, France). The EurAI Fellows program recognizes individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions to the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in Europe. The EurAI Fellows Program honors only a very small percentage of the total membership of all EurAI member societies (up to a maximum of 3%).
• AAIA Fellow since 2021, elected by the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA) in November 2021.
• Member of the Academia Europaea, since 2019.
• Honorary professor at the TU Wien, since 2019.
• Winner of the Test-of-Time Award (Oxford, UK, July 2018), at the 34th International Conference on Logic Programming (ICLP) (paper with the highest impact of the previous ten years)
• Winner of the Best Student Paper Award (Melbourne, Australia, Agosto 2017) at 33th International Conference of Logic Programming (ICLP) with Giovanni Amendola and Marco Manna.
• Winner of Best Paper Award at the International Conference of Logic Programming - ICLP (Cork, Ireland, September 2015) – the most important conference woldwide in the field of logic programming – for the paper "Complexity and Compilation of GZ-Aggregates in Answer Set Programming", coauthored with Mario Alviano.
• Winner of ACM-PODS Alberto O. Mendelzon Test-of-Time Award (Providence, New York, USA, 2009), with Georg Gottlob and Francesco Scarcello. PODS (ACM Symposium on Principles of Database Systems) is the most important conference in the field of Database Theory woldwide.
• Winner of the prize Gems of PODS (San Francisco, USA, June 26, 2016), for the research on Hypertree Decompositions, carried out with Georg Gottlob, Gianluigi Greco and Francesco Scarcello.
• Winner of the Best Student Paper Award at the International Conference of Logic Programming - ICLP (Melbourne, Australia, August 2017), for the paper "Finite model reasoning over existential rules", coauthored with Giovanni Amendola and Marco Manna.
• Winner of the prize "Cedro della Riviera" for Scientific Research in 2017.
• Winner of the prize "Pericle D’Oro" for Scientific Research in 2016.
• Winner of prize "La Calabria nel mondo" in 2013.
• Winner of the prize "Galarte Scienza 2011" - supported by the President of the Italian Republic, and granted to the best calabrian scientists of the year.
• Winner of a Civic Honor in 2011 in Diamante, for the excellence of his research activities.
• Member of the list of the "Top Italian Scientist" of the Via Academy (www.via-academy.org), listing the most cited italian scientists.
