Fields of Scholarship and Research Interests
Professor Schahram Dustdar has established himself as one of the most impactful researchers in Distributed Systems, Edge, and Cloud Computing. His citation trajectory demonstrates a consistent rise, with 6,000–7,000 citations annually in recent years. According to Google Scholar, he ranks among the Top 3 in Europe in Distributed Systems and approximately the Top 23 worldwide. His scholarly output includes more than 600 publications (359 journal articles, 521 conference papers, and 5 books), which have collectively received around 59,000 citations, with an H-index of 102 (Google Scholar, August 2025). In addition, ACM download statistics indicate that his papers have been accessed nearly 75,000 times, averaging about 792 downloads per article. His academic influence was already recognized in a 2014 scientometric study (IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing), which listed him among the Top 5 Computer Scientists worldwide in Cloud Computing for individual productivity.
Over the past decade, Professor Dustdar’s research has primarily centered on elastic computing principles, investigating how systems balance resources, quality, and costs in distributed environments. In recognition of his pioneering work, he was named an IEEE Fellow in 2016 for contributions to elastic computing for Cloud applications. Building on this foundation, his more recent research extends beyond Cloud environments to encompass large-scale distributed systems across the computing continuum, including IoT, Edge, and Fog systems. Currently, his work explores Active Inference, Markov Blankets, and other AI techniques for advancing distributed systems.
In the last ten years, Professor Dustdar has participated in over 45 European, national, and US-based industrial research projects, representing a total value exceeding €86 million, of which approximately €28 million was secured for TU Vienna.
Professor Dustdar has been an active and committed mentor for more than two decades. To date, he has successfully supervised 45 PhD students to completion and currently advises 7 doctoral candidates. His mentorship also includes guidance to over 150 MSc students and around 25 postdoctoral researchers, highlighting his dedication to cultivating the next generation of scholars and innovators.
Beyond academia, Professor Dustdar has made significant contributions as an academic entrepreneur. From 1999 to 2007, he co-founded and served as Chief Scientist of Caramba Labs Software AG in Vienna (later acquired by Project NetWorld AG). Caramba Labs received multiple national and international recognitions, including a nomination for the World Technology Award in Software (2001), ranking among the Top Startup Companies in Austria (Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, 2002), and the MERCUR Innovation Award of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (2002). More recently, in 2024, he co-founded Coovally.ai in Barcelona, a company dedicated to developing AI infrastructure for the distributed computing continuum.
