Present and Previous Positions
Kees Schouhamer Immink is a Dutch engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur who pioneered and advanced the era of digital audio, video, and data recording, including popular digital media such as the Compact Disc (CD), DVD, and Blu-ray Disc. He is one of the most prolific and influential engineers in the field, holding more than 1,100 U.S. and international patents. A large portion of commonly used audio and video playback and recording devices employ technologies based on his work. His contributions to coding systems enabled the digital video and audio revolution by making possible reliable data storage at information densities previously unattainable.
Immink has received numerous tributes that highlight the impact of his contributions to digital audio and video technology. Among his many accolades are the IEEE Medal of Honor “for pioneering contributions to video, audio, and data recording technology, including Compact Disc, DVD, and Blu-ray,” the IEEE Edison Medal, and a Technology & Engineering Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). In 2000, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands bestowed upon him a knighthood. He was elected a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 2007 for pioneering and advancing the digital audio, video, and data recording era. In recognition of his lasting influence, the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities established the Kees Schouhamer Immink Prize in 2019 to encourage research in information science and telecommunications.
Immink is currently President of Turing Machines Inc., a company he founded in 1998. In addition to his practical engineering achievements, he has made significant contributions to information theory. He has authored more than 120 scientific articles and four books, including the influential Codes for Mass Data Storage Media. Since 1994, he has served as an adjunct professor at the Institute for Experimental Mathematics, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, and has also been affiliated as a visiting professor with the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).
