Fields of Scholarship and Research Interests

Nanoscience and Materials Science

Professor Paolo Samorì’s work has opened new chemical frontiers at the nanoscale exploiting the combination of sophisticated nanotools (for fabrication and characterization) and principles of supramolecular chemistry to assemble structurally controlled functional nanomaterials and nanodevices capable of exhibiting a combination of electronic, optical, and sensing capabilities. His contributions have led to the foundation of the transition from supra-molecules to supra-functions and to the development of new multifunctional materials and devices for two-dimensional (2D) and organic-based optoelectronics, sensing, and energy applications.

Prof. Samorì is a recognized leader in the interdisciplinary field at the crossroad between nanosciences, supramolecular sciences, and materials sciences. By taking full advantage of both the use of supramolecular systems as electroactive components and the application of bottom-up and top-down approaches to nanomaterials, he showed his remarkable capacity to open new chemical frontiers in the area of organic, graphene, and hybrid-based electronics, and more generally in the realm of nanostructured multifunctional materials. The originality of his approach relies on the combination of sophisticated state-of-the-art nanotools (for fabrication and characterization) and principles of supramolecular chemistry to develop structurally controlled functional nanomaterials and nanodevices exhibiting a combination of electronic, optical, and sensing capabilities. In his research endeavor, Prof. Samorì is constantly addressing technologically relevant questions with perspectives of applications in everyday life, and ultimately addressing societal challenges and contributing to the well-being of citizens, towards the advent of a true knowledge-based society.
