Fields of Scholarship and Research Interests

Original Contributions

1.    New optimization, decision making and control models for sustainable regional agriculture

Professor Kacprzyk’s works on systems modeling started in the late 1970s at the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), www.iiasa.ac.at, one of the best known think tanks. He has developed many new decision making, optimization, and control (planning) models, mostly for regional agriculture, under uncertain and imprecise information and representation of goals and constraints. These models have been applied in many regional agricultural modelling studies all over the world over the last decades. Recently, these models have been extended with machine learning to model the temporal evolution of life quality indicators, and with an explicit account of sustainability and human specific aspects, notably Kahneman and Tverski’s cognitive biases, in the spirit of Agroculture 4.0 and precision agriculture.

2.    New models for optimal multistage control under imprecise (fuzzy) information

Professor Kacprzyk has proposed new models for multistage decision making and (optimal) control models under imprecisely (fuzzily) specified goals, constraints, termination times, and systems under control, fucused on extensions of dynamic programming. He has also developed a novel feedforward neural network for these problems. For these works he has been awarded the prestigious Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award by the IEEE Computation Intelligence Society, and the 6-th Kaufmann Award and Gold Medal by SIGEF/FEGI for pioneering works on the use of fuzzy logic in economics and management. These models have found many applications for socio-economic systems, mobile robotics, data analyses, etc.

3.    New database queries

Professor Kacprzyk has initiated a new research direction in database queries in which, e.g., „most”, „almost all”, etc. „important” search criteria are taken into account, using a calculus of linguistically quantified propositions. This new queries have been presented  in 1996 as a new technology in a major professional IT periodical, Computer World China, followed by much interest of some commercial companies and startups.

4.    Linguistic summarization of big data sets

Professor Kacprzyk’s novel results involve the so-called linguistic summarization, i.e. an automatic summarization of a big data set (numeric, textual, multimedia) by short sentences in natural language, e.g. „most young workers have low salaries” for a personnel database. His new developments include the generation of linguistic summaries by modern AI tools and techniques of NLG (natural language generation), and elements of affective computing. His works have been applied in practice, notably in decision support systems.

5.    Group decision making, voting and consensus

Professor Kacprzyk’s research of a strong and lasting impact has been group decisions, voting, and consensus formation/reaching. He has introduced the novel concept of an imprecise (fuzzy) majority, e.g., „most”,  to account for opinions of „most” stakeholders. This  has triggered a new research area, with many new models of group decision making. voting, and consensus reaching. The use of rough sets ha salso been shown. These new results have been applied for both human groups and computer (IT) systems.

6.    Symbiotic autonomous systems (SASs)

The recent novel results of Professor Kacprzyk concern the symbiotic autonomous systems (SASs) which   are complex intelligent and cognitive systems that exhibit a symbiosis in human-machine interactions.  His new approaches, notably based on trustworthiness, have opened new perspectives. These works are extremely crucial for, e.g., autonomous driving, and for artificial intelligence in general.
