Professor Ian Conrich is a scholar of film, media, visual culture, and popular culture whose work has developed across cinema studies, cultural history, visual anthropology, and New Zealand and Pacific studies. His research has ranged from film genre and horror studies to national cinema, screen music, visual culture, and the cultural representation of place, identity, and the South Pacific. He is especially recognized for his sustained contributions to the study of New Zealand cinema and for helping build New Zealand studies as an international field of scholarly inquiry.
His work brings together historical inquiry, theoretical reflection, and close attention to screen culture. Across his books, edited volumes, teaching, and institutional initiatives, he has explored how cinema and other visual media shape cultural memory, national imagination, sensory experience, and modern forms of popular narrative. His scholarship has also extended into Indigenous film, Asia-Pacific visual culture, and the relationship between screen media and broader questions of cultural exchange. In addition to his academic writing, Professor Conrich has played an important role in international scholarly organization and cultural exchange. He has chaired the New Zealand Studies Association since 1997, founded the Centre for New Zealand Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, and has been active in international conferences, film festivals, editorial work, and cross-disciplinary teaching in film and visual culture.
