Professor Prasanna’s research spans a wide arc of modern computing systems research, but with a coherent intellectual center: the design of efficient computational methods and architectures for demanding, data-intensive, and performance-critical problems. His work has long been associated with parallel algorithms, heterogeneous architectures, configurable and reconfigurable systems, and the use of hardware-software co-design to achieve major gains in performance and efficiency. In more recent years, these interests have also extended into machine learning systems, edge and cloud platforms, and intelligent infrastructures.

A particularly distinctive feature of his career is the breadth of application domains to which he has brought advanced computing methods. In addition to foundational contributions to reconfigurable and parallel computing, he has led or helped lead important work in smart energy systems, smart grid optimization, and energy informatics at USC. This combination of theoretical, architectural, and application-oriented research gives his profile an unusually integrated character and helps explain his standing across several overlapping research communities.
