Full Professor in Chemistry, University of São Paulo


Professor Omar A. El Seoud obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the Chemistry Institute of the University of São Paulo. Between 1972 and 1974 he was a Research Associate at the Chemistry Department, Texas A&M University, USA, and in 1974 he joined the university career in Brazil as an Assistant Professor at the Chemistry Institute, University of São Paulo. He obtained his Full Professorship in 1978 and was promoted, through public competitions, to Associate Professor in 1982 and Full Professor in 1988. 


He has been a visiting professor at the Science University of Tokyo, Japan (1984), the University of Bayreuth, Germany, as a Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (1984 to 1986), Purdue University, USA (1990), the University of California at Santa Barbara, USA (1991, 1992, 1994), the National Research Center, Egypt (1991, 1993), Université Paris VII, France and the University of York, England (1994, 2001). 


He is an advisor to CAPES, CNPq, FAPESP and FINEP. He is an advisor to the journals J. Org. Chem. Org. Chem., J. Colloid Interface Sci., Colloid Polymer Sci., Anais Assoc. Bras. Quim. (he is also a member of the Editorial Board), and Química Nova. He is Brazil's representative at IUPAC, and is a member of the Advisory Board of J. Colloid Interface Science. His lines of research are on: New applications of surfactants, especially in catalysis, polymerization, nanoencapsulation of reagents and particles, soil decontamination; formation, stability and applications of microemulsions; studies of the mechanisms of organic reactions, especially acyl transfer, and derivatization of natural polymers (cellulose and chitin). His list of publications on these subjects includes 122 papers.
